1.30 m divided into five parts, would give us 26 cm, or the approximate length of a normal foot. I found, however, that, while using this foot-measure in the smallest curves of a figure, it was not possible to establish a sequence of segments which would cover the whole outline of it. I discovered that, instead of considering 1.30 m as a product of five, it had to be divided into four lengths of 32.5 cm. This measure could also have been derived from the human body by holding a string between thumb and forefinger and pulling it into the inner bend of the elbow. Twice would be one arm’s length and half of it a span between thumb and forefinger. We can assume that this was the unit that was used by the ancient constructors…
